My 30-Day Quest to Becoming Organized (Day 3)

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Today I’ve decided to tackle my desk. Although I may never have it all together like some of my friends who are borderline OCD clean and neat, I do vow to do my best. I guess I will discover at some point what that is. And I know my organization plan is an unorganized one. In fact, it’s rather random, but I’m doing it in my own way so that it doesn’t seem like too much of a task, but rather an adventure. Who knows what tomorrow holds. Today, I’m one step closer. The journey continues.

Day-2 Clean Emails Daily

How many emails are in your inbox? I’m really ashamed to tell you how many emails I have in one account alone. After having a meeting with a business associate and friend last week and hearing her tell me she only has 5 emails in her  inbox for each of her email accounts, I felt challenged to do better. Let’s just say I have much more than 5 emails in mine. In fact I have over 5,000 in one account alone. Talk about being authentic. I know change comes about by being real with who you are and where you are. So I own my mess, but I am excited about this quest to change. The thing is I don’t just want to clean things up. I want to change. So on day-2, I commit to cleaning my emails every day. Simple, but I know it will make my life so much better. The journey continues. #AuthenticallyMe

DAY 1: “Put It All Back”

In my book, “Authentically Me”, I devote an entire chapter to tell my audience that I am “authentically flawed”.  One of my many flaws, I must admit is disorganization. I do like things to be clean and neat. The kitchen has to be clean and so does the toilet but step into my office, closet or my car and that is a different story.

So I resolve today that all of this has to change. No more having over a thousand emails in my inbox. No more mail stacking up unopened. No more random things left hanging around in my office, not even my son’s action figures or swords.  But where do I start?

Thanks to my twitter and facebook friends, I’ve been given many suggestions to becoming organized. But the one I will use today before I rest, is to be sure I put everything back where it belongs. Sounds simple and easy to do for all of my friends with A-type personalities.  You think my ex-husband would have rubbed off on me after being married to him almost 14 years.  You see he is the cleanest, neatest person I know. And still I did not get my act together recently after going through my mail one day finding a royalty check that had been buried on my desk for weeks.

So today I have reached the point of beyond frustration and change has to occur. Everything must go back to its place: the toys, the shoes, the books, the paper, the mailing labels etc. It must have a home and return there.  I commit to putting it all back today and every day. The journey begins.
